Snake Robot

THE IDEA

Snake robots are type of self-contained portable devices which can easily be access in confined spaces where the human reach is quite difficult. They help in the automating systems and improve in the accuracy of surgery.

On the other hand, vast applications of snake robotics in healthcare sector, manufacturing sector, defense sector and aviation industry is rising the sales of global snake robotics market.

The snake robot was built as part of the Flying and Robotics Club (FARC) club project. Its aim was to showcase the club’s design and manufacturing capabilities along with providing the members with an opportunity to practically apply their skills and knowledge.

It also served as a platform to learn and apply new skills. The robot built was to be robust reliable, compact, and compliant with the industrial standards of the available components.

THE TIMELINE

  • 1

    Design

The whole snake was designed from scratch following the modular design approach. The snake can be broken down into brackets and modules. Depending on the requirement, the number of brackets fitted can be varied. The design also complies with the Design for Assembly and Dis-assembly (DFAD) concept.

  • 2

    Manufacturing

All the components of the snake were manufactured using 3D printing technology. The material used was ABS plastic since it is cheap, light and strong enough for the required application.

  • 3

    Testing

It was powered by Arduino nano of 7809 IC which converts the 12V from the LiPo battery to 9V. 2 axis joystick module is operated by the user which gives the analog values to the arduino. These values are processed and converted to the suitable data format to be transmitted by the Bluetooth module (master).
